Fighting for the Mind of Christ!

31 Dec

The Bible tells us that those of us who have given our hearts to the Lord have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). I’m very thankful for this. The mind of Christ includes love, power, confidence, wisdom, knowledge, understanding, righteousness, peace, joy, goodness, meekness, patience, purity, generosity, compassion, strength, discernment, kindness, and much more.

Yet day in and day out, thoughts that are contrary to the mind of Christ persistently stop by and try to make themselves at home within us. One of the major problems with negative thoughts is that if we allow them to settle down within our minds, they can give birth to sin, and sin gives birth to death (James 1:15).

The question is, how do we refuse to yield to thoughts that seek to separate us from the mind of Christ, thoughts that like arrows, aim to pierce through our faith, destroying our peace with God – thoughts that lead us into sin? The answer is simple. We fight back.

But how do we fight back? A good place to start is by recognizing the fact that we do have an enemy of our souls. 1 Peter 5:8 cautions us to “Be sober, be vigilant; because YOUR ADVERSARY the devil, walks about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Revelation 12:10 refers to Satan as the “accuser of the brethren”. John 8:44 tells us that not only is Satan a liar, he is the father of lies.

After acknowledging the fact that we Do HAVE An ENEMY who does seek to negatively impact our thought life and to actually destroy us, we must learn to resist him. But how do we resist a spiritual force that’s subtle and evil, and that we sometimes don’t even recognize? We resist him by submitting ourselves to the Lord, constantly.

James 4:7 tells us that we are to submit to the Lord, resist the devil and he will flee from you. Since Satan is a spiritual force, our fight is a spiritual one. “We do not war according to the flesh (for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the casting down of strongholds), casting down imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭3-5‬ ASV).

We fight back and cast down imaginations that are not Christlike with the spiritual weapon of the truth, which is also known as the Bible (see Jesus’ example in Luke 4). Remember that Satan is the father of lies and he hates truth. In addition to using the word of God as a weapon, we should also put on the full armor of God which enables us to stand against the wiles of the devil (Ephesians 6:10-18).

Don’t except evil thoughts that come to mind seeking to lure you into temptation. Fight back by being sober and vigilant, recognizing the enemy’s tactics. Submit yourself to the Lord, resist the enemy and he will flee from you. Use your weapon of truth, which is the word of God, and put on the whole armor of God so that you will stand.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are TRUE, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things (‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭8‬ ASV).

Thank you for this very powerful word. As Christians we need to know the word to renew our mind and thought process and fight the enemy and his schemes. Just as Christ did with temptation, he stated the Word.
