Spilling Coffee for Good

23 Jun

On Thursday morning, I was awake at 3:30am instead of the usual 4-4:30 that I normally began my day in order to be at work at 7am. I thought, wow this is great, I had extra time to write before going to work.

I hurriedly began to prepare my breakfast, when I accidentally overturned a coffee mug that had been sitting in the refrigerator for days.

My usual response would have been to blame the person who had left the mug. Yes, this thought did try to settle itself in my mind. But I decided not to accept it. Instead, I quickly grabbed paper towels and began to clean up the spilled coffee.

As I cleaned, I noticed that some of the coffee had fallen into other items. Since a few other items caught some of the coffee, cleanup was easier. For example, some of the coffee had even fallen on top of a bowl of old rice covered with sunken plastic wrap. To make matters even better, this gave me the opportunity to wipe a neglected area of the refrigerator as well as toss out spoiled food.

My extra time wasn’t used in the manner I had planned. But it was good that I had the time to complete an overdue task, thanks to the spilled coffee.

While I was cleaning, the scripture  came to mind that tells us “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.(Romans 8:28). I was elated because my thought pattern had gone from negative to positive within a few moments after the spill.

We are constantly presented with  countless opportunities to either think positively or negatively, as well as opportunities to blame others for our mishaps. The question is, will we choose to trust the Lord and believe, and even “know” that all things are working together for our good, even when it’s spilled coffee.
